I recently had my '03 Odyssey in for service, and they replaced the actuators on the airbags, saying it was in response to a recall. I asked the service writer if this is the particular part that is hurling deadly shards of metal at the occupants, and he said yes. Is this correct? Or should the entire airbag have been replaced?

I'm not sure, but when I took our '05 Pilot in I was told it's not part of the recall. Now my airbag light is on O_o

This is probably something you should be asking:

1) The NHTSA

2) Takata

3) Honda corporate

4) Another Honda dealer

5) Anyone but an off topic internet car forum.

You make a good point. But I thought I'd start with the most receptive audience.

When we called our dealership, they told us that our CR-V wasn't part of the recall either but that if we demanded to have our airbags replaced, they were going to order the parts for us.

Depends on if the actuator (or ignitor, depending upon the design) is a separate assembly from the airbag itself, and can be replaced separately.

I had a Nissan at one point where the whole airbag was a self contained unit with only electrical connections to deploy it, so they would have, in that case, needed to replace the whole unit and not just the actuator/ignitor.

Honda handled this entire situation horribly. From what I understand, Honda only issued a recall for cars SOLD NEW in "humid" states. The problem is cars not sold in those states could have been sold to someone living in one of those "humid" states. Also, how exactly do they know humidity is to blame for the failures?

Sometimes more information isn't always better information.

Just tyring to be as helpful as possible.

When we called our dealer's service center, they said that they ordered 2 new complete airbag units (driver, passenger).

The INFLATOR is the part sending shrapnel. It's basically a metal tube for the passenger bag, and a round disc for the driver's bag. Made of metal. When the inflator (basically a compressed air type explody thingy) goes off to inflate the airbag, they were rupturing and sending parts and bits of itself out through the airbag. Bad.

Hmm. That makes me wonder if he said inflator but I remembered it wrong. Thanks.

actuator = inflator, yes that is the part that needs to be replaced, the bag portion of the air bag is fine. it is the pipe bomb (what it looks like) that had too much ooompfh aka explosive material that was sending its pieces into the victims
